12-7-11

well, i've been "working" on Battle of the Sea Titans everyday for the last week, and by working i mostly mean sitting there utterly paralyzed by the task at hand. i crawled out of my funk and did this today. it's page 4 of the teaser trailer i'm putting together. pgs 1-2 are done, too. but i skipped ahead to something tasty to get my head back in the game. mission accomplished. ready to kick ass.

last ink test for Sea Titans. ready to print off some blue line copies and get to work on the finals.

11-15-11

another ink test for Battle of the Sea Titans. i think i've settled on using a Hunt 101 Imperial pen nib. it can make just about any line i can imagine. strong and sturdy, it just skates across the paper. i'm glad i found this thing, i was feeling stifled by the 108. too delicate. i'll probably use the 108 for tiny details, it's good for that.

i like inking over pencil art that has been converted to blue line. first time i remember doing that, actually. maybe i have and forgotten.

11-14-11

shit, it's been awhile. back on the train now... if i slack, yell.

10-29-11

well, today's daily dose is a bit of lettering. how exciting.

i'm sure some comic peeps might complain that this isn't a comic book font, but i'm not really sure how much i care about that. it's not necessarily the final font i'm using for this part anyways. oh, and i kinda sorta learned how to make word balloons in photoshop. yeah, it wasn't the most exciting day of work, but i haveta figure this shit out eventually.

i'm gonna ink these Battle of the Sea Titans pages. printed em off on bristol board as blue line art so i can screw it up as badly as i want.  click HERE to see the Sea Titans blog, it's got the first 7 penciled pages and the cover.  it's pretty badass.

this is panel #uno.  a pirate ship in a storm.

line art for the 7Days piece.

after all of the hype this week of going all experimental and using a brush for the 7Days piece, i went back to a pen and kept things pretty conservative. 1.) the piece was penciled too tightly to even dream of doing it justice after 3 days working with a brush and 2.) i really fell in love with this Hunt 101 pen tip. i have yet to find the limits in it's movement and variety in line quality. i can get really hair-thin lines and broad brush-like strokes, giving me the ability to almost perfectly replicate any pencil line that i lay down.

10-20-11 (2)

these were done solely with a Hunt Imperial 101 pen nib. it's a bold tip with a shockingly sensitive touch, making it possible to achieve just about any kind of line you could want from a single pen. i feel that it can still give me that fluid variance of line weight i was liking with the brush pen, but a thousand times more control. and since i'm a control freak, i'm kind of drawn to this nib.

10-20-11

stippling? this inking experimentation is getting out of hand.

trying out some different techniques over the 7Days pencil art. some of the line art was done with a Hunt 103, stippling and effects done with a Hunt 101 (very interesting and diverse tool)

10-19-11 (2)

i can't stop drawing. now i'm back to using a Hunt 108 crow quill tip and using it in ways i've never attempted.

i'm obviously having fun with the brush, but it gives me a better appreciation for the control of a pen. i've been reading "Setting the Standard: comics by Alex Toth 1952-54" (click HERE) WHICH IS AMAZING by the way... and i was struck by the ink work of Mike Peppe over Toth. i don't think i've ever seen someone else inking over toth, but this guy was fantastic.. he had a great touch. i'm going to be studying the hell out of this book.

10-19-11

day 2 of using this brush pen. going completely overboard with it and loving every minute of it.

here are some zoomed in details:

10-18-11 (part 2)

i have been screwing around a bit more tonite with this brush pen and stepped further out of my little artistic box than i have in many many years. kind of a EUREKA moment, to be honest... i'm actually freaking out right now, cuz this is kind of the way i've been fantasizing about drawing lately. this was done with a pentel brush pen, pro-white (to add texture, something i haven't done in probably a decade, if ever) and water. i'm really excited about the results. below is the sketch i started with.

10-18-11

i'm pulling out and trying some inking tools i don't normally use. looking to shake things up a bit. this was done with a brush pen, something i have only done a couple of times. i'm liking the expressiveness of the line more than using a crow quill pen, which i'm getting a bit bored of. there's a bit of crow quill in here too, but mostly it's the brush pen. i'm diggin' it. alot. might goof around with it a bit more and do a trial run over a copy of the 7Days piece.

finished pencils for the 7Days piece. rabies-ridden zombie mob

10-15-11

desk shot of pencil art for the 7Days piece. i used more of a sculpting technique with the pencil this time, building line upon line upon line until it starts to take form. usually i break it down pretty quickly to something clean and sharp, this was fun and i'll surely do it more often.

10-14-11

alright, so here's what's going on.. i'm officially finished with another Star Wars: The Clone Wars graphic novel, and i'm gonna keep striking while the iron is hot. thus, the daily sketch has returned, hopefully for good. i'll do my best.

first up are some rough thumbnail sketches for a "7 Days to Minneapolis" piece (from a story by Ed Waara). a gang of rabies-ridden zombies comin'atcha. i hope to have this done--penciled, inked and full digital color--by next week at this time. stay tuned.

this last one was done a few months ago, but gives a quick idea of what i'm gonna be going for

goofing around with a brush pen. i'll probably be trying more of this.. getting a bit bored with crow quills.

some more crazy real-life creatures.

first one is a horrible lamprey mouth, the second is some weird ancient shrimp thingy that they thought were extinct but have shown up again. researching lampreys will give you nightmares... horrible things

edit: added another page of weird parasitic creatures. i don't know what the hell they are.

8-10-11

wow, first post in over a month. i hope that doesn't happen again. it's been a pretty crazy few weeks, workin' on this star wars book.

no better way to find inspiration for a crazy creature than to look towards nature... there are animals prowling the ocean or lurking in plain sight, only visible with a microscope, that put any imaginary beast to shame.

the top image is a sea worm, and the bottom is an electron microscope view of spider's foot.

7-2-11

well, i'm starting up another Star Wars: the Clone Wars book so i'll probably be putting up alot of preliminary sketches here since i obviously won't be able to show any finished work at this time. i'm sure i'll be loosening up with non-star wars sketches too, so keep checking back occassionally even if star wars isn't your thing. thanks!

here's some clone troopers.

some more character sketches for the mystery project. hopefully more can be revealed about this in the near future.
